For the past two years I have been coaching basketball in the Brookline elementary schools. I noticed girl?s who participate have three magic ingredients: they can afford the fees (currently it costs $170 to participate on the town team and $100 for the middle school team), they can purchase basketball shoes, and they have someone who can give them a ride to and from practices and games.
In June of 2007 I started a program to promote girls basketball and participation. So far I have raised enough to help purchase shoes, pay for fees and I probably spend more time driving girls home then I do coaching. But I wouldn?t have it any other way. To be able to provide a girl a ride or a pair of basketball shoes so she can participate is what this program is all about.
